Matthew: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Chapter five of Matthew's Gospel is where we find the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes. It's possibly one of the most beautiful chapters in the Bible.
As the United States Mother's Day approaches, I was thinking about Mary. Did she talk to Jesus about the Beatitudes? She obviously lived them. Growing up, he must have observed her living them, at least the first seven of them.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit..."
“Blessed are those who mourn..."
“Blessed are the meek..."
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness..."
“Blessed are the merciful..."
“Blessed are the pure in heart..."
“Blessed are the peacemakers..."
She must have modeled these. By being poor in spirit, Mary humbled herself before God. She mourned when Joseph died. She was meek, though she hungered and thirsted for righteousness. She was merciful when Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem and Mary and Joseph had to go back three days and searched for him. She scolded him but she certainly didn't dwell on it. Of course, she was pure of heart and a peacemaker.
Though the day is almost over, it's one day closer to Mother's Day. This Mother's Day, I am going to strive to be more like Mary and live the Beatitudes.
